StoneWater, a band out
of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, caught my attention recently and in a short time
span, I found myself energized about the potential of music "out there" in
the indie void. StoneWater is one of those bands you'll come back for to
listen to time and again and before long, you'll be looking at their tour
calendar and seeing what you can do to see how this band is live as well as
how talented you've come to find them online.
There's a balance in this band you
look for when trying to sort out a band that gets it from bands that are
still struggling to find the magic formula. It's not a huge secret, this
formula; good lyrics, distinction of sound in the mix, learn more than 2 or
3 notes and have a hook. StoneWater has this covered it would seem with
talent to spare.
A quick trip to their
myspace page and
you'll soon be adding another band to your list of personal favorites. In an
age where some bands find it necessary to scream at you and others find it
necessary for some ungodly reason to "emo" you, StoneWater saves the day and
puts the gimmics aside; left the "hatred" at the door and in the end, simply
delivers good music that will stand the test of time.
Without You is a good example of
the range of the band itself. Strong on vocals with a driving beat and solid
talent around the vocals, it's a great example of what this band can do and
then the band will drop it down and pull a "From the Deep" on you and put
the world into slow motion while you examine your own life, as a great song
will pull out of you.. When you think you've heard the range of the band,
"Here We Go" show yet another side while leading off with a well placed
piano and the distinctive vocals once again pull you into the heart of the
song of a brand new day being an open door to opportunity.
And then there's Hero. This song
shows a good range of slow to fast paced music that's a good illustration of
the style of the band itself. But whether it's through a single song or by
listening to all they have available it's clear to see that this band knows
how to tell a story and build up to a climax many bands today seem to miss
or not understand.
Comprised of Ren Schuffman on
vocals and keyboards (and noted "big cheese"), Jose L. Gabaldon on lead
guitar and keyboards, Ryan Traffanstedt on Bass and backup vocals and then
Ron Norvell rounds out this talented group on drums. In the end, StoneWater
is one of those bands that most definitely "gets it". With the turmoil the
industry itself is in bands can get lost in the shuffle of technology yet,
because of technology such as MySpace, you can find the great bands if you
go look. Fans of good music going to search it out is how music will evolve
and the "Old Days" of the RIAA/Clear Channel and others going to get it for
you is fading; just not fast enough.
In the end it's a band like
StoneWater that keeps me motivated in what I do because if you look hard
enough and utilize the technology around you, great bands aren't so hard to
find and the personal reward you feel when you do makes it all worth while.
StoneWater, welcome to Renegade
Radio. Hope to see you in Dallas soon!
